LUXUL (Viola. Voice. Violence /// London, UK)
Luxul’s performances utilise an electric viola, effects pedals and the artist’s voice to create a meditative, cacophonous and often chaotic output that is ritualistic and primal.
One of the key underlying principles of the whole endeavour is that nothing is utilised as it should be. The viola is beaten, scratched, abused but seldom ever “played”. It serves frequently simply as a microphone to amplify a voice which is screamed, roared and growled.
Everything in this project is built around the artist’s personal experience with chronic pain and an ever-failing body. The viola becomes a sort of voodoo doll that she attempts to pass her suffering on to.
